Transport Companies Hit Hard By Rising Cost of Petrol
It wasnt that long ago that business in the UK and US found themselves under a large amount of pressure when their margins were slashed due to a increase in petrol prices. Transport-based companies were hit hardest for obvious reasons and lots had no choice but to cut pay and cut vehicle numbers.
Now, after it was announced that petrol prices are set to rise again in the coming months, some businesses are on the edge and a large percentage of them are having to cut their fleet even further. The worst part of it, according to many transport companies is that they are increasingly unable to formulate accurate profit projections. “We get a set of forcasts drawn up and then they mean nothing when petrol goes up so much” argues Jerry Henley, Managing Director of JHG Foods. Around 25% of all companies in the US that were heavily reliant on transport, went into administration last year, which is a figure many predict will be replicated this year as well.
Many people and businesses are on their last legs right now and the last thing they need is an increase in their overheads. “We are being crippled” argues Fiona Potter, who runs a small furniture chain in the UK. Our customers expect their furniture to be delivered to them, which is something that is becoming financially unviable for us now. Some companies such as the one mentioned above have taken up cheap van leasing as a way of bringing down their overall costs. This is because van leasing enables businesses to not buy their vans outright and so this is a useful option if cash-flow is poor. An interesting point to note is that Citroen van leasing has come out on top this year in terms of popularity, largely due to the high miles per gallon figures they offer. LDV van leasing is also up their with the most popular choices as their reliability is well respected in many industries.
As Petrol Prices Soar, Transport Companies Suffer
Being forced to heavily reevaluate their business models is something that UK and American companies are accustomed to, after the price of petrol shot up last year. Many who relied on large fleets of vans to transport goods all over the country were forced to slash employee pay and take a number of their vehicles off the roads.
Fleets may need to be reduced even further now and companies pushed even closer towards breaking point as the government announces predicted further cost increases in the coming months. The worst part of it, according to many transport companies is that they are increasingly unable to formulate accurate profit projections. “Each time we plan out our business for that quarter, petrol prices are put up and our costings go out of the window” says Barry Hemstone, MD of RDA Foods. Over 20% of all American transport-based businesses were forced to cease trading in 2008, and the figure is thought to be something similar in 2009 also.
For companies that rely so heavy on petrol prices to turn over a profit, the news of another rise has not been well received. “We are being crippled” argues Fiona Potter, who runs a small furniture chain in the UK. Our customers expect their furniture to be delivered to them, which is something that is becoming financially unviable for us now. A number of similar companies are turning to van leasing to try an reduce their outgoings. Because they are not buying the vehicles outright, they can afford to spend more on petrol whilst maintaining their margins. An interesting point to note is that Citroen van leasing has come out on top this year in terms of popularity, largely due to the high miles per gallon figures they offer. Ford van leasing is also up their with the most popular choices as their reliability is well respected in many industries.
Electric Scooters To Fight Fueling Gas Cost
There are three types of motorcycles. They are the street bikes, the off-road bikes and dual purpose bikes. Street bikes are further categorized as cruisers, mopeds and scooters amongst others. The off road motorcycles are not for the roads but specifically for racing. The dual purpose motorcycles are used for racing and have also features that permit it to be used on the roads.
The high automobile pollution and traffic congestion are reasons that make motorcycles make headway amongst vehicles on the road. Its carbon emissions are lower. It has better fuel efficiency as compared to other vehicles on the road. The fuel economy is primarily due to its smaller mass. Though motorcycles rate better in terms of greenhouse gas emission, the total pollution per mile is ten to as much as twenty times when compared to a car. Motorcycles produce more nitrogen oxide which is a byproduct of combustion and a major component of smog. The lower efficiency of its catalytic converters is the main cause of emission of nitrogen oxide.
In recent times, the motorcycle market has shown an upward swing. The global market grew by 6.5 percent despite the global economic downturn. Or perhaps the growth has been fuelled by the economic downturn and the increase in fuel cost. The market for electric scooter is also on the rise. Electric scooters run on battery instead of gasoline. These silent scooters, though with lower speed, have better fuel economy. With gasoline price steadily increasing, electric scooter becomes an option. It is very less polluting in terms of air and noise pollution. Better battery technologies are expected to make it more popular. There are many electric scooters on the road such as Eped Sport/City, Vectrix VX-1, ZAP Zapino, E-Solex, Yo Speed, Razor E200S electric scooter, EVT-4000e, Peugeot Scoot’Elec and Io-scooter, Ezip Electric Scooters.
Motorcycle sales are highest in the Asian countries of China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam. Motorcycle owners are more than the other vehicle owners. Motorcycle owners are double the number of automobile owners in Taiwan. Registration of motorcycle increased by 50 percent in the United States. It is a common means of transport in the frontier towns of Latin America.
Replacing Gas With Battery
Scooters are distinguished from other categories of motorcycles with its protective leg shield, step-through frame and footboard. Its wheels are generally smaller than other motorcycles. The scooters are further classified into electric scooters, mobility scooters, gas scooters, motorized scooters and kick scooters.
The most common scooters in the market and on the road are the gas scooters. Their engines are powerful and range from 50cc to as much as 250cc. There is the classic step-through frame as well as the sportier looking scooters. Some are meant for city driving while others are designed for highway driving. Scooters have a better mileage than other vehicles with up to even 75 miles per gallon. They are easily maneuverable and need little space for parking. Mobility scooters are designed to enable the handicapped and the elderly to move around in the neighborhood safely and slowly. They have a speed ranging from 5 to 10 miles per hour. Scooters specially designed for the teenagers are the motorized scooters. Their engines are smaller of 50cc or lesser. These are called mopeds, segways, standup or gas scooters and seated scooters. These scooters have a lower traveling range of 5 to 20 miles and speed ranging from 8 to 20 miles per hour. But these are trendy. These are less expensive and have a better gas mileage. Kick scooters or Push Scooters are meant for kids. These have no engines and are the most eco-friendly. They have a push and glide motion where the legs are used for pushing. These can be taken to school and easily transported. They are also very cheap.
Another class of scooters is the electric scooters. They do not use gasoline and instead run on battery motors. Electric scooter owners need no longer be worried about the increase in gas price. Electric scooters comes in a variety of models such as Vectrix VX-1, Eped Sport/City, E-Solex, ZAP Zapino, Razor E300S seated electric scooter , Yo Speed, Peugeot Scoot’Elec, EVT-4000e, Ezip Electric Scooters and Io-scooter.
Electric scooters have low emissions. The scooter is almost noiseless. However it moves at slower speeds. It runs smaller distances before the next recharge is required which is a plug-in. Some of the models of electric scooters are cheaper than the gas scooter.
How to choose a freight forwarder
f your business needs to transport goods, then at some point, you will need the services of a freight forwarder. But what exactly do they do and how do you choose one?
Freight forwarders aid clients preparing price quotations by advising on freight costs, port charges, consular fees, costs of special documentation, insurance costs, their handling fees and recommendations on the best packing method to protect the goods while being transported. Pricing depends on the distance from the place of origin to the destination to special packing requirements such as refrigeration or, for instance, transportation of potentially dangerous materials.
The main objective of freight forwarding services is to deliver goods on time and in good condition on the right destination. Using established relationship with carriers like water-borne vessels, airplanes, trucks and railroads, freight forwarding services will ensure that the goods will be moved along the most economical route, choosing among the many quotes for the one which has the best comination of speed, cost and reliability.
The first thing to think about when choosing which freight forwarding company you will use is the company’s experience with the routes and products like yours. Other selection criteria includes: global coverage and local expertise, reference customers, wide product portfolio, and overall costs.
Global coverage and local expertise. The company should not only have an office in your area but to also have one where your goods originate from (if this is a different location) for easier communication should the need arise. Experience of moving freights, especially goods like yours, along these areas is an additional point. That means they understand how to handle and care for your goods.
Reference customers. Previous client referrals are a great source of information on how good a freight forwarder is. Good companies will provide references and track records of these readily.
Wide product portfolio. Freight forwarding companies which have been running long will be experienced in utilizing different transport modes available as well as providing additional value-added supply chain services if the need arises.
Overall costs. Although money matters are important, prices should not dictate your choice of freight forwarding company, as cheaper price may compromise service quality.
Prior to listing possible freight forwarding partners, take note of your objectives, total cost, the coverage necessary for customer service, information technology and reporting needs. Other things like the commodities and their density, target date, location and market, and the kind of product and service level that you need are few of the information freight forwarders may need to know upon meeting.
Randomly select a few known and reliable potentials. Evaluate their feasibility and quantify potential benefits. Make a list of services you need and see which companies meet your requirements. You can narrow down your choices based on the findings you come up with. Further assess their abilities and experience by requesting references from previous clients and asking for their track records.
Freight forwarding is an integral part of the logistics, haulage & distribution, freight transport and road haulage chain, and if your business moves goods of any type it pays to udnerstand the industry.
The Top Transport Methods For Cruising In The USA
America is home to some of the best driving roads in the world. The most well known is probably the brilliant Route 66, but you will not have any problem finding lots more like it.There are some incredible highways crossing each and every way across the country so traveling long distances is easy really. But what is the best form of transport for youradventure holidays in America?
Camper van. Picking up one of these beasts in America is pretty easy as there are so many around. Equally, there will always be a buyer whereever you end up as well. This is a great way to see America if you are holidaying in a group as there will be lots of room for everyone. Its also pretty good if your budget isn’t massive as you’ve always got a bed to kip in and you can even prepare your own food
Convertible. There is no more iconic image that breezing along the straight long roads with the sun on your face and the wind through your hair. American people love their convertibles and so there are an incredible variety to take your pick from. Personally I would go for an old Cadillac and would rent rather than buy one. This is what a lot of people do on their fly drive trips All you need now is a model girlfriend/boyfriend and some country and western on the radio to make your trip complete
Motorbike. Traveling around on two wheels is one way to put some fun into your trip, especially if you’re bike is big and the sun is out. This truly is the ultimate way to travel across the states and experience all that the American scenery and culture has to offer. When it comes to choice of bike, it really has to be a Harley Davidson, which again is an American institution that can be bought or rented from pretty much anywhere. If you go for this option then make sure you invest in some decent safety gear as the last place you want to end up on your trip is in the hospital
The Perils Involved in Buying Second-hand Automobile Spares
If you are searching for automobile parts, there are plenty of ways that you can locate the parts that are called for. Some methods are safe, and will cause no troubles. But then, some methods that car parts are acquired are plain unsafe. One instance of this is purchasing second-hand automobile spares from a car breakers, or car repair shop. All of these places ordinarily trade used car spares that can be used for various things when fixing your car. What’s alarming, though, is the fact that some of these often put used car spares in a car that’s going to be repaired, also, just in order to save the automobile repair place a small amount of money. But here are some of the perils of buying used car parts if you aren’t aware.
1. The Background
When purchasing anything that’s used you rarely know the history of the product. The same holds true for auto parts, unfortunately. Consider that when you purchase auto parts from a junk yard you rarely know if that component has been through an auto accident and is a good enough piece to put on your car. Even though most of the automobile spares that can be obtained through a junk or scrap yard are bought at your own risk and without a guarantee, there are some major dangers associated with doing so.
2. Too Unreliable
As remarked, used car spares can also be purchased from car repair shops. The truth at most auto repair shops is that the used car parts that are there are normally kept in one huge pile in the back of the repair shop. If you buy a second-hand alternator from them then how would you know it is in good condition? It is really possible that the auto parts that are bought from a repair shop have problems, or else if they are OK now car spares they may just break down next week. The auto spares that can be acquired through an car repair shop or a car breakers are just too unreliable to warrant purchasing. Naturally, you may very well be proffered a refund or exchange if this were to occur, but the wisest move would be to keep away from used automobile spares altogether.
3. Being Cheated
Another possibility, and perhaps the greatest one, is the danegr of being chiseled when purchasing used auto parts. You could be sold parts that are fake, or that are older and more weakened than you are led to believe. It doesn’t really matter whether the auto spares are for a pre-owned Toyota or a used Saab , you want to be assured that you are purchasing an actual manufacturer made component.
Even if you don’t buy the used car spares through a repair shop or a junk yard, if you do buy used auto parts through a private dealer then you always run the risk of getting downright ripped off. What is even more discomforting is the fact that you may never even be able to find the guy who cheated you ever again.
In the end, it doesn’t matter much whether or not the auto component really does work or not. The simple fact is that purchasing used car spares is just downright risky. Even though loads of people do this daily, purchasing used car spares should be avoided!
Ride to Work
The government has been campaigning a lot lately for people to start using public transport a lot more.
But is this a big ask for a country that just seems to not want to do anything? Let us take a brief look at a few reasons as to why the routine will not work.
1) The country is just too cold; the worst thing is waking up on a cold winter's day and thinking about making your trek to work. In the cold months public transport is a lot more likely to be cancelled. I can tell you now that I would much rather prefer to jump into my car put on the heaters and relaxingly drive to work.
2) Folk in Britain have become a lot lazier and the reason for this is because they sit infront of the TV all day.
3) This is probably a big one. Stress, is one of the main reasons why people do not use public transport. Do you remember the cold winter mornings when you are waiting for a train and then it says cancelled, you are left in a right panic thinking of ways to get to work on time, it's just a problem that should not be occurring in your life.
So no matter what employees do I still think that the most relaxing way to get to work is by car. The government can offer things such as bike riding incentives but I can assure you that if the temperature goes into minus then I will be using my vehicle to stay warm.
Obviously people can buy petrol guzzling new cars such as to buy a bmw or buy a Mercedes, so this is what the government should really be concentrating on and that is creating less emitting vehicles.
