Toyota Floor Mat Recall
Toyota has recalled over four million Toyota and Lexus trucks and cars with possible safety issues – its largest recall ever. Last fall the NHTSA received numerous reports that floor mats on the driver’s side were moving and causing the accelerator pedal stick. A highway patrol officer and his family were killed, bringing the issue to the attention of the nation. Due to a jammed gas pedal, his Lexus sped more than 120mph and crashed. Evidently brakes alone were not able to stop the vehicle. Toyota issued a safety alert recommending that Lexus and Toyota owners take out the floor mats on the driver’s side and keep them out until the problem could be further investigated. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration also released an alert in which they encouraged owners of these cars to remove mats or other obstacles that might lead to unintended acceleration. Here are the models with possible safety risks:
• 2007 – 2010 Toyota Tundra
• 2005 – 2010 Toyota Tacoma
• 2004 – 2009 Toyota Prius
• 2007 – 2010 Toyota Camry
• 2005 – 2010 Toyota Avalon
• 2007 – 2010 Lexus ES350
• 2006 – 2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350
Toyota and Lexus service technicians have undergone training and are now equipped to make the required corrections to these cars. Although it seems like an straightforward repair; simply replace the faulty floor mats with a better design, Toyota wants to ensure the safety of their vehicles. Technicians will actually modify the accelerator pedal and in some models will also install a brake override system. Beginning in April 2010 there will be accelerator pedal replacement part available for those customers that would like to have it installed. Toyota has begun sending out recall letters asking owners to bring their vehicles in for repair and anticipates a deluge in their service departments. To help tackle the inconvenience many Toyota Dealers are offering rental cars to owners affected by the recall.
