Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced the name for its new model series which until now has been known as RR4. The name was announced by CEO, Tom Purves at a press conference held at the Shanghai motor show. 

The new car will be called the Rolls-Royce Ghost and production will begin at the company’s Goodwood manufacturing facility on the south coast of England later in 2009. 

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars CEO, Tom Purves, said, “We are delighted to formally announce the Rolls-Royce Ghost. It is one of the most sofisticated names in the automotive industry, evoking images of adventure and technical innovation. The name reflects this new model’s breadth of abilities. The first cars to bear the name were known not only for impressive dependability and refinement but also great flair and style. This car will be the first in a new generation of models to carry this evocative name and will give us two pinnacle product lines – Phantom and Ghost.  

The Rolls-Royce Ghost will be built on its own dedicated production line at Goodwood but will share paint, wood and leather workshops with the Phantom series of cars. Rolls-Royce has expanded all areas of its manufacturing facility over the last 18 months to prepare for the introduction of the Ghost model. 

The Ghost name was used by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars between 1906 and 1925 although these cars were first introduced as the 40/50hp model. A total of 7,876 of these cars were made during this period, 6173 in Derby, and 1703 in Springfield, Massachusetts. 

From quarter four 2009, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will offer five models: Ghost, Phantom, Phantom Extended Wheelbase, Phantom Drophead Coupé and Phantom Coupé. The Phantom range is powered by a naturally aspirated direct injection 6.75 litre V12 produces 453BHP at 5350 rpm (338KW/460PS) and 720Nm of torque at 3500rpm. 

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars retailed 1212 cars around the world in 2008, a 20 per cent increase over the previous year and marking five years of continued growth since the Phantom was first launched in 2003.

Unlike many Dutch cities, Rotterdam has a heart for motor sport. For a number of years now, the spectacular Bavaria City Racing takes place over here and real Formula 1 cars race on the Rotterdam streets. Good news: Rotterdam contracted the event for the next couple of years. 

This year the motor sport event is held on August 16 and will again be free to visit. For  Bavaria precisely this aspect is very important. “Bavaria would like everyone in the Netherlands to enjoy Formula 1. Normal people pay a lot of money for a ticket. With us, it is free. Bavaria thinks this great day out,” said 

Peer Swinkels, executive Bavaria NV. Also Herman van Holt of the organization expresses its enthusiasm: “This year we are celebrating an anniversary, the event is five years old. The Formula 1 fans can prepare for a beautiful day.” 

Well, the editor of Icar cannot wait until August 16. Apparently, the ING Renault F1 team will be there again, but will of course various other racing classes are present.

The Audi Q7, the company presents on the Shanghai Car Show has a different look. But not only the exterior has changed, technically the car has undergone some changes too. “The fuel consumption is reduced on all the models. The press release talks about the fact that the new Audi is als available with the cleanest diesel technology in the world, the TDI clean diesel. 

What’s changed? The grille is the most significant one. The high chrome finish on dark black gives the model an extra luxury look. The bumpers were changed. When the lights go on the street lights up in Cool Blue illuminated. Yeah, the Audi Q7 is equipped with Xenon lighting or an adaptive system with Xenon lights. This means the headlight to the car rotate with the steering angle. Around the new Audi is equiped with LED lighting. 

Extra efficiency
All gasoline and diesel engines for the new Audi Q7 have direct fuel injection. The same goes for the Audi Q7 3.TDI Clean Diesel. The 3.0-liter V6 TDI has a DeNOx catalyst with AdBlue injection. It’s AdBlue additive ensures that nitrogen oxide (NOx) is converted into harmless nitrogen and oxygen. The exhaust system ensures that the Audi 3.TDI Clean Diesel meets the strictest emission standards in the world, which is expected in September 2014 takes effect. The Audi Q7 3.0 TDI clean diesel fuel allows an average of 8.9 l/100 km in fuel consumption. 

The other engines for the Audi Q7 are also more efficient. Mainly because of the recovery system that convert mechanical brake and roll energy into electrical energy and stored in the battery. This system provides a lower fuel consumption and therefore lower CO2 emissions (reduction up to 5 g / km). 

The 3.0 TDI with 176 kW/240 hp is satisfied with 9.1 l/100 km. Your Audi Q7 4.2 TDI (250 kW/340 hp) rides on an average of 9.9 l/100 km (was 11.1 l/100 km). The Audi Q7 V 12 TDI (with a power of 368 kW/500 hp) consumes despite its high-performance 11.3 l/100km. The average consumption of the 3.6 FSI petrol version (206 kW/280 hp) is 12.1 l/100 km and the 4.2 FSI V8 

is 12.7 l/100 km. 

The standard of luxury and top comfort on this Audi. Through the six speed tipronic transmission you control the quattro permanent four-wheel drive, you have got air conditioning and a good hi-fi and if you are not yet fully satisfied, you can opt into a B & O sound system, complete with infotainment system for your navigation, telephone and music. The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI and 6.0 TDI has adaptive air suspension with three preset modes standard. And what would you think of ceramic disc brakes, adaptive cruise control, Audi lane assist, the Audi parking system and comfort seats.

It is almost impossible to imagine the world without certain things in it. I have a long history with the VW Golf, as my Grandfather owner one in my formative years and ferried me and my brother around in it quite a lot. I have very fond memories of this car which have remained with me right into my adulthood. On the surface though, the VW Golf isn’t exactly breathtaking, it’s boxy, cumbersome and not to mention quite a bit more expensive than most of its competition. So exactly where the does this abiding love affair with the VW Golf stem from and how has it endured for so long?  
It was over 35 years ago when the Volkswagen Golf first made its appearance and it has been a consistently popular seller ever since. The evolution of the VW Golf has been a joy to witness over the decades, as the car has gone from looking like it was designed by an artistically-challenged child, to the sleek, rounded and aesthetically pleasing models we see today. Its popularity stems from its honesty and it reserve; a couple of traits the British public seem to lap up in their people and consumer products. The VW Golf doesn’t try to be flashy, or gimmick-ridden, but it does everything it’s supposed to with elegance and panache. Considering it is a German car, it is very British.
The Brand New Volkswagen Golf Mark VI comes with a choice of four petrol engines and three diesel engines. My personal pick of the bunch is the twin-charged 1.4Litre Petrol which produces 160Bhp which is unbelievably good for a car of this size. Driving this car is unlike the experience of the previous model Golf (the Mark V), as it adds an element that its predecessor was lacking slightly; fun. Other than the GTi models, the Golf has never been considered an exciting drive. It has been described as safe, comfortable, economic and ecological but never exciting. The supercharged and turbocharged 1.4 litre engine feels raw, edgy and above all, eager to please. All of a sudden the VW Golf seems a lot less British after all.
Essentially, the Volkswagen Golf Mk VI has retained everything that the consuming public loved about the car since its initial inception, but they have been treated to a few added extras now. The Golf is still safe, comfortable, economical and ecological, but now it has the capability to force your head back into the headrest and leave you with a silly schoolboy grin on your face. Although the Golf has evolved into the consummate city car, if you take the new Golf out onto country lanes, you will see why I can say with confidence that this is the most impressive the Golf has ever been.

There are many options available to people who primarily drive in urban environments. Peugeot have received many plaudits for the new 107 which has been a popular and critically lauded model ever since it was released in this country. The little Peugeot is also riding the zeitgeist of economically and ecologically sound motoring, providing its owner with high miles per gallon ratios and exceedingly impressive CO2 emissions. As far as the green set is concerned, the Peugeot 107 is a paean of the direction the automotive industry should be moving in.

So, in a test drive, how does the little Peugeot perform? In simple terms, for its size, cost and performance; it is very difficult to imagine why you wouild want a different car.

As it has been designed for the confines of the city, the Peugeot is at its best at low to mid revs, as this is where it is going to do the majority of its travelling. Putting your foot down on the sliproad out on to the motorway will result in some audible complaining from the 1.0 Litre engine, and the 0-60 time of around 14 seconds isn’t going to win any drag-races in anyone's books, but for city driving its perfect.

I always thought that a city car’s priority should be that it is fun to drive, because driving in the city is the exact opposite of that.It should put that smile on your face when all around you is smog, gloom and Big Issue salespeople. With its nippy engine, cool looks and wallet-friendly costs, the little Peugeot 107 does exactly that.  

Peter Huntington who lives in Devon had an unfortunate start to 2009. The guy who was set to get married to Julie Turnbuck had completely unfortunate luck. Peter who is a full time self employed car technicial decided to complete his work load before he had to go away on honey moon for two weeks. He had five new cars to fix.

Peter has always had an addiction for wearing huge amounts of hair gel. It was quite late on a Saturday night when he was repairing the last car. The actual vehicle had its own mind, it was switching itself on and off without anyone knowing why. So Peter decided to investigate further, he removed the engine cover and grabbed his torch to delve a bit deeper. He stated to the publication "It was something I wish I had never done", because all of a sudden all he could remember was the feeling of heat on his head. Some how the engine had switched itself on and the car spark had collided with a hair strand setting his head alight.

It was not until he looked into the car mirror that he noticed his head was in flames, but quick thinking saved his life, he ran to the garages nearby toilet and stuck his head in there, he states that "Although it sounds disgusting, it actually did save my life". Peter was admitted to the local hospital where they bandaged him up and sent him on his way.

The next morning he awoke and was full of happiness due to it being his wedding day. But fate was not to let the wedding proceed, because devastation struck twice, with his to be wife Julie Turnbuck getting her wedding dress set alight.

The couple are now planning to reschedule the wedding and have stated that the local fire brigade will definitely be attending as well as local motoring news.
